GORE-TEX

GORE-TEX is a high-performance fabric featuring a thin membrane made from expanded polytetrafluoroethylene (ePTFE). This membrane contains billions of microscopic pores—each 20,000 times smaller than a water droplet but 700 times larger than a water vapour molecule—making it durably waterproof, windproof, and highly breathable. It keeps rain out while allowing sweat to escape, ensuring comfort in challenging conditions. 

Yes, GORE-TEX is engineered to be both fully waterproof and breathable. The membrane’s microscopic pores block liquid water from entering but allow perspiration vapor to pass through, preventing overheating and moisture buildup inside your clothing. This dual functionality makes it ideal for snowsports and other outdoor activities in wet or variable weather. 

2-layer GORE-TEX bonds the membrane to an outer fabric with a separate loose lining, making it warmer and heavier—great for resort skiing or everyday use. 3-layer GORE-TEX sandwiches the membrane between the outer fabric and an inner liner, creating a lighter, more durable, and highly breathable shell, favored for high-performance and backcountry pursuits. 

Regularly clean your GORE-TEX gear according to manufacturer instructions. Reapply a durable water repellent (DWR) treatment as needed to maintain surface water beading, which helps preserve breathability. Proper care ensures the membrane continues to perform optimally, keeping you dry and comfortable. 

Original GORE-TEX products are waterproof, windproof, and breathable, designed for wet-weather protection. GORE-TEX Infinium, on the other hand, is intended for drier conditions, offering windproofing and water resistance but not full waterproof protection. Infinium is best for activities where breathability and comfort outweigh the need for complete waterproofing.
