Ski poles come in various types tailored for alpine, powder/backcountry, racing, and Nordic skiing. Alpine poles are versatile for most downhill skiing. Powder poles have larger baskets for deep snow, while racing poles are lightweight and aerodynamic. Nordic poles are longer and lighter, designed for cross-country skiing and maximum pushing power.

Common ski pole materials include aluminium, carbon fibre, fiberglass, and composites. Aluminium poles are durable, affordable, and flexible, making them ideal for most skiers. Carbon fiber poles are lighter and stiffer for high performance but can snap under high impact. Composite poles blend materials for improved shock absorption and warmth but tend to cost more.

The correct ski pole length ensures comfort and efficiency. Stand upright and flip the pole upside down, gripping under the basket - your elbow should form a right angle. Adjustable poles are available for backcountry or mixed terrain, allowing on-the-fly length changes for climbing or descending.

Key features include ergonomic grips (plastic, rubber, or cork), adjustable wrist straps, and snow baskets. Larger baskets are best for powder, while smaller ones suit groomed runs. Some poles offer adjustable lengths or shock-absorbing shafts for added versatility and comfort.

Beginner poles are typically standard aluminum for durability and value. Advanced skiers might choose lighter carbon or composite poles for performance, or specialised designs for racing or backcountry use. The right choice depends on your skill level, skiing style, and terrain preferences.
