There are three main types: neutral, moderate, and aggressive. Neutral shoes offer comfort for beginners and all-day wear. Moderate shoes have a slight downturn for technical climbing and versatility. Aggressive shoes feature a pronounced downturn for maximum power on steep, overhanging routes but are less comfortable for long sessions.

Climbing shoes should fit snugly, with toes slightly curled but not painfully crammed. A close fit maximises precision and performance, especially for technical climbs. Many experienced climbers size down for a tighter fit, but comfort is important for longer routes or beginners.

There are lace-up, Velcro, and slipper closures. Lace-ups offer the most adjustability and secure fit, making them ideal for varied foot shapes and longer climbs. Velcro straps are quick to put on and take off, perfect for gym or sport climbing. Slippers provide simplicity and sensitivity but less adjustability.

Softer, stickier rubber offers better grip for smearing and slab climbing, while firmer rubber provides support and durability for edging. Stiff shoes support your feet on small holds and long climbs, while softer shoes enhance sensitivity and flexibility for technical moves.

Leather shoes are more breathable and tend to stretch and mold to your feet over time, offering a custom fit. Synthetic shoes stretch less and retain their shape, which can be beneficial for maintaining performance in aggressive shoes.

All-around or moderate climbing shoes are versatile for most styles, including crack, slab, and moderate overhangs. However, aggressive shoes are best for steep sport climbing and bouldering, while neutral shoes excel in comfort for long trad or multi-pitch routes.
