Snowboard thermals, also known as base layers, are the first layer of clothing worn directly against your skin. They help regulate body temperature by trapping heat, wicking moisture away, and protecting against windchill. This keeps you warm, dry, and comfortable, making them essential for performance and enjoyment on the slopes.

Thermals insulate by trapping a layer of warm air close to your body and wicking sweat away from your skin. This prevents heat loss and keeps you dry, reducing the risk of getting cold from damp clothing. Effective thermals also reduce friction and chafing during active movement.

The best thermals are made from moisture-wicking, breathable fabrics like merino wool or synthetic fibres such as polyester. Merino wool offers natural odour resistance and warmth, while synthetics dry quickly and are ideal for high-intensity activities. Avoid cotton, as it absorbs moisture and can leave you feeling cold and damp.

Thermals should fit snugly like a second skin without being restrictive. This close fit maximises moisture-wicking and insulation while preventing cold air gaps. Flat seams help minimise chafing, and the right fit ensures comfort and freedom of movement under your other layers.

Yes, thermals are versatile and can be worn in various conditions. In cold weather, layer them under mid and outer layers for warmth. In milder conditions, thermals can be worn alone for moisture management and light insulation. Their adaptability makes them useful year-round for snowboarding and other outdoor activities.

Choose lightweight thermals (150-200gsm) for high-intensity or spring conditions, midweight (200-250gsm) for general use, and heavyweight (250+gsm) for extremely cold or low-activity days. The right weight depends on your activity level, weather, and personal warmth needs.

Wearing both top and bottom thermals provides full-body warmth and moisture management. While insulated pants may sometimes allow you to skip thermal bottoms, most riders find a complete set more comfortable, especially in cold or variable conditions.
