Climbing harnesses are designed for specific activities: sport harnesses are lightweight with minimal gear loops, trad harnesses offer more gear loops and padding for comfort and gear storage, alpine harnesses are lightweight and adjustable for use over bulky clothing, and full-body harnesses provide extra support for children or rescue scenarios.

Select a harness based on your activity: sport climbers benefit from lighter, streamlined harnesses, while trad and ice climbers need more gear loops and padding for comfort and equipment. Alpine harnesses prioritise weight and packability, and full-body harnesses are best for added safety or carrying heavy loads.

Key features include adjustable waist and leg loops for fit, sufficient gear loops for your equipment, a robust belay loop for safety, and comfortable padding. For winter or alpine use, look for closed-cell foam that resists water absorption. Certification to safety standards like UIAA or EN is essential for reliability. 

A harness should fit snugly around your waist above your hips and allow for adjustment over different clothing layers. Leg loops should be comfortable but not restrictive. Try on harnesses before purchase and hang in them if possible to ensure comfort and security during use. 

Regularly check for fraying, cuts, or excessive wear on webbing, stitching, and the belay loop. Clean with mild soap and water, and store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Retire your harness if it shows signs of damage or after several years of frequent use, following manufacturer guidelines.
