Pack essentials such as comfortable hiking boots, weather-appropriate clothing, a rain jacket, water, snacks, sun protection, and any personal medication. For longer treks, include a backpack, map or GPS, first-aid kit, and extra layers. Keeping your pack light but complete ensures safety and comfort on the trail.

Start with easy trails if you’re a beginner - these are usually flat and well-marked. As your fitness and experience grow, try moderate or rugged trails with more elevation and distance. Trail difficulty ratings help you match the route to your abilities, so check reviews and official guides before heading out.

Trekking poles are highly recommended for rugged or technical terrain, long hikes, or when carrying heavy loads. They reduce strain on your knees and ankles and improve balance, especially during river crossings or steep descents. For short, easy hikes, they are optional but can still offer support.

Always plan and research your hike, check the weather, and never hike alone if possible. Stay on marked trails, hydrate regularly, pace yourself, and take breaks as needed. Inform someone of your route and expected return time. Carry a map, know local wildlife risks, and use common sense to stay safe.

Acclimatise gradually to higher elevations, stay hydrated, and listen to your body for signs of altitude sickness. Physical fitness is crucial, especially for treks above 3,000 meters. Travel insurance covering medical evacuation is strongly recommended for high-altitude regions.

Hiking typically refers to day walks on established trails, often easier and shorter. Trekking involves longer, more challenging journeys, sometimes lasting several days and requiring overnight camping. Trekking often takes you through varied terrain and remote areas, demanding greater endurance and preparation.

Use hiking apps like AllTrails or check local park websites for trail recommendations. Ask experienced hikers or join local hiking groups for suggestions. Trail reviews and official resources provide valuable insights into trail conditions and difficulty.

Wear moisture-wicking layers, sturdy hiking boots, and weather-appropriate outerwear. Bring a hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen for sun protection. Always carry a rain jacket and extra clothing for changing weather conditions, especially in mountainous or remote areas.

While solo hiking is possible, it’s safer to go with a companion or group, especially on unfamiliar or challenging trails. If you choose to hike alone, inform someone of your plans, carry navigation tools, and be extra cautious about safety and preparedness.

Many trails and hiking groups welcome children and pets, but check specific trail regulations. Children should be supervised, and dogs must be leashed. Choose family- and pet-friendly routes to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for all participants.
