Look for helmets certified to EN 12492 and UIAA 106 standards, which ensure the helmet meets rigorous requirements for impact absorption, penetration resistance, and secure fit. These certifications are internationally recognised for climbing and mountaineering safety, indicating the helmet has passed stringent tests for protection and durability.

Climbing helmets (EN 12492) are designed for protection against impacts from falling rocks and side impacts, with a strong chin strap to keep the helmet secure during falls. Industrial helmets (EN 397) focus on overhead protection and have a weaker chin strap, while cycling helmets (EN 1078) are tested for different impact scenarios and are not suitable for climbing.

A properly fitted helmet ensures maximum protection, as certification tests require the helmet to stay securely in place during impact. An ill-fitting or poorly adjusted helmet may not provide adequate protection, so always adjust the straps and suspension system for a snug, comfortable fit before every climb.

Some helmets are dual- or triple-certified to meet climbing (EN 12492), skiing (EN 1077), and cycling (EN 1078) standards. These multi-sport helmets undergo additional testing but may be bulkier and heavier. Always check the specific certifications to ensure the helmet is appropriate for your intended activities.

Inspect your helmet before each use for cracks, dents, or worn straps. Replace your helmet after any significant impact or if you notice visible damage. Manufacturers generally recommend replacing helmets every 3–5 years, even without visible wear, to ensure continued safety and performance.
