Climbing ropes are divided into dynamic and static types. Dynamic ropes stretch to absorb falls and are used for lead, trad, and sport climbing, while static ropes have minimal stretch and are designed for hauling, abseiling, or rescue. Never use static ropes for lead or top-rope climbing, as they don’t absorb fall energy.

Thicker ropes (around 10mm) are more durable and ideal for indoor climbing or frequent top roping, while thinner ropes (as low as 8.9mm) are lighter and better for long outdoor routes or multi-pitch climbs. Rope length should match your route—30m for indoor, 50–60m for most outdoor climbs, and up to 70m for longer pitches.

Single ropes are used alone and suit most sport, trad, and gym climbing. Half ropes (used in pairs) are ideal for trad, alpine, or ice climbing on wandering routes, offering redundancy and reduced rope drag. Twin ropes (also used in pairs) are clipped together into each piece of protection, mainly for ice or alpine climbing.

Slings are loops of strong webbing used for building anchors, extending protection, or equalising gear placements. They come in various lengths and materials, such as nylon (durable and stretchy) or Dyneema (lightweight and less stretchy). Always inspect slings for wear and replace them as needed for safety.

Regularly check ropes and slings for fraying, cuts, soft spots, or discoloration. Clean with mild soap and water, and store them dry, away from direct sunlight or chemicals. Retire any gear that shows signs of damage or after significant falls to ensure ongoing safety on every climb.
