A snowboard helmet should sit level on your head, with the front edge no more than one inch above your eyebrows, fully covering your forehead. There should be no gaps between your head and the helmet’s lining, and it should feel snug but comfortable. Some helmets include sizing pads or adjustable fit systems for a more precise fit. 

Look for helmets certified to standards such as ASTM F2040 (U.S.), CE EN1077 (Europe), or both. These certifications indicate the helmet meets rigorous requirements for impact protection, retention systems, and coverage, ensuring it’s suitable for non-motorised snowsports like snowboarding and skiing. 

Most snowboard helmets use EPS (expanded polystyrene) foam for impact absorption, with either a hard ABS plastic shell (hard shell) or a lighter, thinner plastic shell fused to the foam (in-mold). In-mold helmets are lighter and lower profile, while hard shell helmets are more budget-friendly and durable. 

Replace your helmet after any serious impact, even if there’s no visible damage, as the foam liner may be compromised. Helmets are typically designed for a single large impact. Always follow the manufacturer’s guidelines for replacement to ensure ongoing protection. 

Modern helmets may include technologies like Mips® (Multi-Directional Impact Protection System) or Spherical Technology, which provide extra protection against rotational forces during angled impacts. These features can further reduce the risk of brain injury in a crash.
