An avalanche airbag backpack is a safety device designed for backcountry skiing and snowboarding. It contains a built-in airbag system that, when triggered, rapidly inflates to increase your volume and help keep you near the surface of an avalanche, reducing the risk of burial and making rescue easier. 

No, avalanche airbag backpacks do not guarantee survival. However, studies show that an inflated airbag can significantly reduce the risk of being fully buried and can prevent around half of all fatalities in avalanches of size 2 or larger. Proper avalanche education and additional safety gear are still essential. 

There are two main types: gas canister-powered systems and electronic systems. Gas canisters use compressed air or CO2 to inflate the airbag, while electronic systems, use supercapacitors for quick, reliable inflation even in cold temperatures. Electronic systems are often more travel-friendly, as they do not require special airline documentation. 

Key features include a reliable airbag system, comfortable fit, dedicated compartments for avalanche tools, ice axe loops, gear straps, and a leg safety strap. Some packs offer Bluetooth connectivity for diagnostics, modular storage options, and hydration compatibility for added convenience on long tours. 

Modern avalanche airbag backpacks are designed to be as lightweight and compact as possible, with some models using carbon canisters or electronic systems to reduce weight and bulk. Most packs are spacious enough to carry essential gear for a full day in the backcountry without being cumbersome. 

Most avalanche airbag systems inflate within 3–5 seconds after activation, ensuring rapid deployment in an emergency. This quick inflation is critical for maximising your chances of staying on the surface of an avalanche.
