Ski touring involves traveling uphill and downhill on skis, often away from groomed slopes and ski lifts. It requires specialised equipment like touring bindings, climbing skins, and lightweight boots, allowing you to ascend under your own power and then ski down, typically in backcountry or off-piste terrain.

You’ll need touring skis with touring bindings, climbing skins for uphill travel, ski touring boots, adjustable poles, and a ski touring backpack. For safety, always carry avalanche gear: a transceiver, shovel, and probe. Crampons or ski “knives” are also recommended for icy or steep conditions.

Avalanche safety gear - transceiver, shovel, and probe - is crucial because ski touring often takes place in uncontrolled, avalanche-prone terrain. These tools enable quick rescue in case of a slide, and knowing how to use them is as important as carrying them. Avalanche awareness training is strongly recommended.

Climbing skins attach to the base of your skis and grip the snow, allowing you to slide forward while preventing backward slip. They are essential for ascending slopes and can be removed for the descent.

Choose poles that are lightweight and adjustable or telescopic, with long grips for varied hand positions on steep terrain. Powder baskets are useful for deep snow, and sturdy construction ensures reliability in challenging conditions.
