WHY YOU NEED TECHNICAL WALKING SOCKS

A quality pair of technical socks are the foundation for any epic walk. Whether you’re prepping for long-distance backpacking, an afternoon hike or a run on the trails, the correct socks will keep you comfortable by reducing shock, adding support, removing sweat and heat and minimising blisters. Cotton socks, however, soak up moisture and can soon cause discomfort and irritation, especially on longer routes. Here’s why you need to invest in some functional footwear.

Why do I need technical walking socks?

A good technical sock uses highly breathable fabrics which draw sweat away from the skin to keep your feet dry and comfortable. The fabric on the top of the foot should be lighter than that on the toe and heel. This gives you insulation where you need it the most and allows unwanted heat and moisture to escape. There should be extra cushioning in high impact areas (like the heel and ball of the foot) and added support around the ankle and arch.

Some socks, like the Smartwool PHD series, compress the muscles to increase support and blood flow by flushing out cramp-causing toxins and aiding recovery, helping you walk further for longer.
