A ski fleece is a mid-layer garment made from synthetic materials like polyester, designed to provide insulation and moisture-wicking properties. It traps body heat to keep you warm while allowing sweat to escape, making it an essential part of the layering system for comfort and temperature regulation on the slopes.

Ski fleeces are lightweight, highly breathable, quick-drying, and provide excellent warmth without bulk. Their hydrophobic nature means they don’t absorb moisture easily, helping you stay dry during active pursuits. They’re also easy to care for, machine washable, and maintain their shape after repeated use.

A ski fleece should fit snugly but not restrict movement, allowing for comfortable layering over a base layer and under a ski jacket. A well-fitted fleece traps warmth efficiently while ensuring you can move freely on the slopes. Avoid overly tight or loose fits, as these can compromise insulation and comfort.

There are various types, including microfleece (lightweight and breathable for high activity), midweight, and heavyweight fleeces (for extra warmth). Performance fleeces may include stretch fabrics for flexibility and features like thumb loops or zippered pockets for added functionality.

Fleece offers a great balance of warmth, breathability, and comfort compared to insulated jackets or wool layers. It’s less bulky, dries quickly, and is ideal for regulating temperature during intense activity. However, in extremely wet conditions, a fleece may need to be paired with a waterproof outer shell for best results.

You can wear a ski fleece as an outer layer in mild, dry conditions or for après-ski activities. However, for skiing in wet or windy weather, it’s best used as a mid-layer beneath a waterproof and windproof jacket for optimal warmth and protection.
