INSULATED JACKETS

An insulated jacket uses natural down or synthetic materials to trap heat and reduce body heat loss in cold conditions. Down feathers or synthetic fibres create pockets of air that retain warmth, helping you maintain a comfortable temperature during outdoor activities in low temperatures. 

Down insulation, made from duck or goose feathers, offers an excellent warmth-to-weight ratio and high compressibility, making jackets lightweight and packable. Synthetic insulation uses man-made fibers that retain warmth even when wet, dry quickly, and are generally more affordable and easier to care for than down. 

Synthetic insulated jackets are best for wet or damp conditions, as they maintain their insulating properties when wet and dry quickly. Down jackets lose warmth if they get wet, though some use hydrophobic down or water-resistant outer fabrics for added protection. 

Key features include adjustable hoods, hem and cuff closures, multiple pockets, and two-way zips for ventilation. Consider weather resistance, breathability, packability, and reinforced areas if you’ll wear the jacket with a harness or backpack. Match the jacket’s insulation type and features to your intended activity and weather conditions. 

Your jacket should fit snugly enough to trap warmth but still allow for comfortable layering and free movement. Try on insulated jackets with your usual base and mid-layers to ensure the right fit for your outdoor activities. 

Hybrid insulated jackets combine down and synthetic insulation to maximise warmth, packability, and moisture management. Commonly, synthetic fill is used in high-moisture areas like shoulders and arms, while down is used in the core for warmth and compressibility. This design balances performance for a range of conditions.
