Snowboard clothing typically uses lightweight and durable polyester or nylon fabrics with waterproof, breathable membranes bonded inside to keep moisture out while allowing sweat vapor to escape. Durable water repellent (DWR) coatings and taped seams enhance waterproofing.

Synthetic insulation such as Primaloft or Thinsulate is commonly used for warmth even when wet, though some jackets use natural down for superior warmth-to-weight ratio in dry conditions. Insulation amounts vary by jacket and purpose.

Shell jackets are waterproof but typically uninsulated designs, suited for layering in warmer or high-output conditions. They use 2-layer or 3-layer fabric constructions to balance durability, breathability, and protection.

High breathability prevents moisture buildup by allowing sweat vapor to exit, helping maintain comfort and temperature regulation during intense activity on the slopes.

Taped seams seal stitch holes, preventing leaks and increasing the garment's overall waterproof effectiveness, essential for harsh weather conditions.

Lightweight mesh or silk-like taffeta linings help wick moisture and improve breathability, differentiating from heavier fleece linings often found in streetwear.

Powder skirts prevent snow from entering the jacket from the waist during falls or deep powder riding, enhancing warmth and dryness.

Snowboard pants should have reinforced cuffs, waterproof/breathable membranes, adjustable waistbands, and ventilation zippers to regulate temperature and protect against snow intrusion.

3-layer fabrics bond membrane to outer and inner layers, offering higher durability and lighter weight, favoured for more intensive snowboarding. 2-layer fabrics provide comfort and versatility for general use.

Snowboard clothing generally offers a looser fit than ski wear to allow more freedom of movement and layering, but technical designs often balance comfort with prevention of heat loss.
