Ski jackets are designed specifically for snowsports, featuring waterproof and breathable fabrics, durable outer shells, and technical extras like snow skirts, secure pockets, and adjustable cuffs. Regular winter jackets focus on warmth and may be bulkier, often lacking the weatherproofing and flexibility needed for active skiing or snowboarding.

Traditional down jackets provide excellent warmth but lose insulating power when wet, as moisture causes the down to clump together. Some down jackets now use hydrophobic down or combine waterproof outer fabrics for better performance in damp conditions, but for consistently wet weather, synthetic or fully waterproof jackets are more reliable choices.

Waterproof ratings, measured in millimeters (mm), indicate how much water pressure a jacket can withstand before leaking. Ski jackets typically range from 5,000mm to 20,000mm, with higher ratings offering better protection in heavy snow or rain. Look for taped seams and DWR (Durable Water Repellent) coatings for complete waterproofing.

Down insulation is lightweight, compressible, and extremely warm - best for cold, dry conditions. Synthetic insulation performs better in wet or high-activity settings, as it retains warmth even when damp and dries faster. Hybrid jackets combine both for a balance of warmth, weight, and weather resistance.

Prioritise waterproofing, breathability, and insulation that matches your activity level and climate. Useful features include powder skirts, storm flaps, adjustable hoods, secure pockets, and ventilation zips. Reflective details, lift pass pockets, and reinforced panels can enhance safety and durability on the slopes.

A good ski jacket should allow room for layering without being too loose. Look for articulated sleeves and a hip-length cut for freedom of movement. Adjustable cuffs, hems, and hoods help seal out snow and wind, ensuring a comfortable and protective fit during active snowsports.
