Looking for the perfect day out that takes you from mountains to beaches? Look no further, because we’ve got you covered. It’s not just about practicality when it comes to packing, it’s about looking and feeling great too. So, here’s our ultimate packing list for a day of adventure and relaxation.
Keeping Yourself Cool
First things first, start off cool and comfortable with a moisture-wicking, breathable T-shirt. If you’re going to be out in the sun all day, a long-sleeved SPF-rated T-shirt is a must-have for protecting your skin. Don’t forget to pair your hiking shorts with leggings for added protection. Opt for lightweight hiking boots or shoes for longer treks, or for less intensive hikes, choose a pair of hiking sandals to keep your feet cool. And before you set out, cool down with a refreshing cold drink, ideally below 10°C.
If mosquitoes are an issue in the area you’re visiting, go for loose-fitting long-sleeved clothing or opt for clothing that has built-in insect repellent for an extra layer of protection. And don’t forget to spray any other exposed areas, such as your hands, face, and ankles.
A packable sun hat is an absolute essential when the sun is high at midday. Choose one that covers both your face and neck for maximum protection. We recommend the Buff Explore Booney Hat, which has a wide brim for extra coverage and a self-storage pocket so you can pack it away when it's not needed. Sun glasses are also a must-have to make your day even better. Choose glasses that are light and won’t fall off when you’re taking big steps.
If you’re heading to high altitudes, bear in mind that there will be a significant temperature drop compared to sea level, roughly one degree Celsius per 500m. Plus, wind chill can set in, so make sure you pack a second shirt in your backpack to change into at the top. A small microfibre towel is also handy to dry yourself off and can be used later at the beach. And once you're dry and cosy in your fresh shirt, pop on a technical mid-layer to prepare for the descent.
Nutrition + Hydration
Staying hydrated is crucial, especially in hot weather. Make sure you take plenty of water for the duration of the hike. We recommend using a water filtering bottle that can be filled at any free-running water source, allowing you to dramatically cut down on weight and stay hydrated throughout the day. Just make sure there are points along your route where you can stop to fill up.
Who doesn’t love snacking? Take the opportunity to enjoy some high-energy snacks like flapjacks and peanut bars to keep you going. Avoid chocolate bars if you don't want to be left with melted chocolate on your hands and sunglasses when it gets too bright.
Swimwear, shorts, or a beach dress can be easily rolled up and take up very little space in your bag. Choose something light and airy that can be packed down, but is easy to change into once you make it down the mountain. Put on some flip flops, roll out your microfibre towel from earlier, and lie back for some well-deserved you-time on the beach.
And last but not least, don’t forget to pack your camera to capture all the amazing moments and experiences along the way. We’d love to see your journey too!
