A ski base layer is worn directly against your skin to regulate body temperature by wicking sweat away and providing insulation. This keeps you dry, warm, and comfortable on the slopes, forming the foundation of an effective layering system for winter sports.

The most popular materials are merino wool and synthetic fabrics like polyester. Merino wool offers excellent warmth, breathability, and natural odour resistance, making it ideal for multi-day use. Synthetics dry quickly, wick moisture efficiently, and are great for high-intensity activities.

A ski base layer should fit snugly, like a second skin, to maximise moisture-wicking and prevent cold air gaps. Avoid anything too tight that restricts movement or too loose that traps air, as both can reduce comfort and performance.

Yes, base layers come in lightweight, midweight, and heavyweight options. Lightweight is best for high-intensity or mild conditions, midweight balances warmth and breathability for most days, and heavyweight is for very cold or low-activity conditions. Choose based on your activity level and expected weather.

Base layers can be worn solo in mild conditions or during high-output activities. However, for colder or variable weather, they should be layered under mid-layers and outer shells for adaptable insulation and protection.

Merino wool base layers provide excellent heat retention, breathability, and natural antibacterial properties, allowing them to be worn multiple days without odour. They’re soft against the skin and effective at regulating temperature even when damp.
