Ski pants (or ski trousers) are more fitted at the waist and hips, resembling regular trousers, while salopettes are high-waisted, looser, and feature braces or suspenders for extra support. Salopettes provide added coverage and help keep snow out, making them popular for deep snow or colder conditions.

There are three main types: uninsulated (shell) pants for versatility and layering, insulated pants for built-in warmth, and softshell pants for breathability and stretch in drier conditions. Salopettes are often available in these same constructions, with bib-style coverage for extra protection.

Key features include waterproof and breathable fabrics, taped seams for full waterproofing, snow gaiters to keep snow out of boots, articulated knees for mobility, and reinforced cuffs for durability. Adjustable waistbands and ventilation zips are also useful for comfort and temperature control.

They should allow freedom of movement without being too tight or too loose. Pants that are too tight restrict motion, while overly loose fits can slide down or let in snow. Salopettes should offer a relaxed fit with secure braces, and both should be long enough to cover ski boots properly.

Yes, both styles offer similar protection and technical features. The choice comes down to personal preference and style. Salopettes may be preferred for added warmth and security, while ski pants offer a more modern, streamlined look.

Look for durable, waterproof, and breathable fabrics like nylon or polyester with a technical membrane. Insulated versions use synthetic padding for warmth, while softshells prioritise stretch and comfort. Reinforced areas at the ankle and inner leg improve longevity.
