Ueli Steck is a phenomenon, an unstoppable climbing machine to whom speed is everything and limits are boundless. He has perfected the art of minimalism when it comes to his kit, taking the concept of ‘fast and light’ to a whole new level as he summits some of the world’s most challenging climbs in just a matter of hours.

We asked Ueli to give us his top 5 adventure essentials:

My gear can vary depending on the trip, the country the altitude and the conditions. I spend a lot of my time training for my climbing trips; biking and running are a big part of my day-to-day routine too.

These are some of my essentials that always make the trip, be it to the city or the mountain:

1. The Quasar Hybrid Pullover

I worked with Mountain Hardwear to design a lightweight, easily packable waterproof, breathable pullover for mountain ascents. As it’s DRY.Q Elite and air permeable, it also means I can keep it on for tough climbs, biking and running even when I’m working hard, as it constantly breathes, keeping my temperature regulated. Clever details including the sealing cuffs and hood mean that snow, ice and cold air are kept out.

2. Ghost Whisperer Down Jacket

This down jacket is super light and contains water repellent down; the fabric is amazing too and it took two years for Mountain Hardwear to find it, as I needed the lightest, strongest fabric they could source for tough mountain use. To keep space down in a pack, it’s also stows into its own pocket, so it’s the perfect piece of kit to have for keeping warm.

3. Cool Runner Tee

To keep fit for the mountains I can spend 80% of my time in training. Running makes up a large part of this training time, I love to be out in mountains and the fresh air. My Cool Runner tee uses a cooling technology that means it cools my body down as I sweat, so ideal for hot environments as it also gives me UV protection. It’s always in the bag when i‘m travelling, in case I get the chance to get out for a run.

4. Suunto Ambit 2

The new GPS range from Suunto means I can keep track of my routes as well as have all the data I need for training. The Ambit range is the go-to for me for everyday use. I can upload and share too on Movescount –

5. Topo Tech Tee

I spend a lot of time travelling and do a lot of events and talks, so not all my essential gear is for the mountains! Mountain Hardwear’s poly-cotton tee range has meant I can grab it out the bag and put it straight on so it looks smart for presentations and as it’s a technical fabric, it wicks and dries fast too under those stage lights!
