OUR ULTIMATE WILD DESTINATIONS

Scrap the guidebook and get off the beaten track – we’ve been there and done that. Instead, check out some more remote destinations this season and push your limits in wild, rugged, and untouched landscapes. Get inspired with a few of our favourites.

1. Sahara, Sudan

465658073

If you like an alternative to honeypot destinations, the vast and isolated Sahara is about as remote as they come. Journey through the diverse landscape, interact with the local Bedouin and follow in the footsteps of ancient Meroitic civilisations as you traverse the Sudanese terrain. But the remote adventure doesn’t end when the sun sets: pitch camp each night under the desert sky to experience unspoilt stellar views reserved only for those who dare to seek them.

2. Amazon, Peru

613678038

Spiders bigger than birds, finger nail-sized frogs, emerald tree boas and pink river dolphins, all coexisting in the most biodiverse place on Earth. Destinations don’t get wilder than the Amazon. Home to Tambopata National Reserve and Manu Biosphere Reserve, and sheltering the world’s last uncontacted tribes, it’s worth braving the bug bites for a once-in-a-lifetime expedition to this constantly evolving, ever-shrinking landscape.

3. Kootenay Rockies, Canada

936650764

Home of the ‘Powder Highway’ in winter, the Kootenay Rockies is a skier’s paradise turned under-the-radar summer nirvana. Get your adrenaline fix mountain biking over rocky terrain or rafting on wild waters, or explore at a slower pace on multi-day hikes and paddling on one of many crystal-clear lakes. When the day is done, head away from the tourists and resorts into the backcountry, to soak in one of the region’s natural hot springs.

4. Okavango Delta, Botswana

458991939

An African safari like no other. Get a different perspective as you explore the Okavango’s waterways in a mokoro (traditional-style dugout canoe) or on foot. Star species include elephants, lions and an unrivalled array of birdlife, from eagles to kingfishers. Once the day is done, wild camp under starry skies, with the Milky Way and Southern Cross visible on clear nights. With no phone signal or WiFi, the Okavango gets you completely off-grid.

5. Albania

483453957

What can you expect from a country closed to outsiders for much of the 20th century? An untouched wilderness of towering mountains, wild rivers and beaches to die for, where you can soak it up from summits of over 2000m, raft the untamed Vjosa River and discover canyons and crumbling castles from a time long forgotten. Right now, you can still get a taste of the true Albanian wilderness, but you can be sure it won’t stay that way for long once word gets around.
