In everyday UK retail use, "rucksack" and "backpack" mean the same thing: a bag with two straps carried on both shoulders. Some outdoor brands use "rucksack" specifically for traditional canvas-style bags with flap-top closures, distinct from technical packs with hip belts and adjustable harnesses. Snow+Rock uses both terms to describe the same technical, high-capacity packs built for trekking and expeditions.

Start with capacity: 40–50L suits a weekend trip, 50–65L suits a week-long trek, and 65L+ suits extended expeditions. Check the back length matches your torso, not your height, for a proper fit. Look for an adjustable hip belt to transfer weight off your shoulders, and consider a women's-specific fit if you want a shorter back length and narrower shoulder straps.

Pack heavier items close to your back and centred between your shoulder blades to keep your centre of gravity stable. Store items you'll need during the day, such as snacks or a rain jacket, near the top or in outer pockets for quick access. Use compression straps to stop gear shifting around once the pack is loaded.

A well-fitted rucksack with a padded hip belt and ventilated back panel is comfortable to carry for long periods, since the hip belt transfers most of the weight off your shoulders. Comfort depends heavily on correct sizing and load distribution, which is why getting fitted before a long trek is worth doing.

Empty all pockets and shake out loose debris before cleaning a backpack. Spot-clean with mild soap and water rather than a washing machine, which can damage the frame and any waterproof coating. Leave the pack open to air dry fully before storing it, to prevent mould and odour building up inside.
