BEST WALKING BOOTS AND TRAIL SHOES 2016: HILLWALKING & HIKING

Whether you’re hiking local trails or trekking the Himalayas this spring/summer, our new season walking boots offer all of the comfort and support you need for your next adventure. Here are our favourite 2016 arrivals from world-leading brands Scarpa, Salomon, Mammut and The North Face.

Mammut Comfort Low Gore-Tex Surround

The highlight of Mammut’s latest trail shoe is the GORE-TEX Surround inner liner, which provides 360° moisture management and ventilation by helping perspiration escape all around the foot (reducing the risk of discomfort or blisters).

This air-permeable layer, which sits in-between the wedge and insole, adds some cushioning too.

It goes without saying that GORE-TEX Surround is one of the biggest advancements in waterproof tech in a decade. These shoes will be your best friends when hiking over long distances in warmer spring and summer weather.

Scarpa SL Active

This sturdy 3-4-season hiking boot has a durable Sherpa leather upper which is both resilient and scuff-resistant for more rugged routes.

The SL Active includes a Heel Tension System and V-Flex System, which are designed to provide stability and natural flexibility throughout the boot, making those steep mountain trails more comfortable.

For overseas trekking or hilly hiking trips in the Lake District or the Cairngorms, this boot will add some much-needed comfort and support.

Salomon X-Ultra Mid 2 GTX

The X-Ultra combines the comfort and flexibility of a trail shoe with the durability and ankle protection of a hiking boot.

This model is made all the more supportive and close-fitting to the foot with the Sensifit lacing system.

It also includes a waterproof and breathable GORE-TEX Performance Comfort Footwear membrane to help keep your feet dry, cool and comfortable, while the ultra-lightweight Advanced Chassis adds comfort and stability.

Scarpa R-Evo GTX Suede

Two technical features define this innovative walking boot, which is suited for weekend walks as much as multi-day hikes.

The first is the Sock Fit System, which connects the boot’s tongue, collar and flex point with a strip of S-TECH SCHOELLER elastic technical fabric. As the name suggests, this provides a closer, more responsive fit.

There is also the protective suede upper, which is backed with GORE-TEX to block out the elements.

The North Face Hedgehog Hike Mid GTX

The Hedgehog is constructed with the sole of a trail shoe and equipped with the support of a walking boot, thanks to a full-length TPU shank.

The protective upper is a combination of full grain leather and textile mesh, while a waterproof and breathable GTX membrane keeps feet dry and comfortable.

This is ideal for day walks where comfort is a priority but you still need sufficient ankle support for tougher terrain.

Salomon Quest 4D GTX

The new and improved Quest 4D is a versatile boot which is suitable as much on the Duke of Edinburgh Award as it is on Kilimanjaro.

The 4D Advanced Chassis ensures that your feet and ankles and stable and secure when treading over varied and uneven terrain.

Like the X-Ultra Mid 2, this boot includes GORE-TEX’s waterproof and highly breathable Performance Comfort Footwear membrane.
