FCO Travel Advice - Know Before You Go

Before you go to extremes, take a few moderate precautions.

Snow + Rock is working with the Foreign & Commonwealth Office. We both want you to have the perfect trip abroad. Know Before You Go is their safer travel campaign. It recommends this checklist, and so do we.

Passport

Make sure that your passport is valid for a minimum of six months from the date of your return. And check that it contains up-to-date information on your next of kin.

Entry requirements

Find out the entry requirements for the country you are visiting. Their Embassy or High Commission will be able to tell you what British Nationals need. Just be sure to get your necessary visa and permits before you go.

Travel Insurance

Its very important to take out comprehensive Travel Insurance. And cover should include medical costs, repatriation costs and any equipment you are taking, plus possibly dangerous sports or activities. So think ahead.

EHIC

For most European travel take an EHIC with you. This will give you reduced cost or sometimes free medical treatment in 28 European countries. Get an EHIC online at www.dh.gov.uk/travellers or apply by phone on 0845 606 2030.

Laws and Customs

Get familiar with the local laws and customs of your destination. And remember that in certain countries, the security situation can change rapidly. So monitor the news and check out the FCO website, www.fco.gov.uk/travel or call on 0845 850 2829 prior to and during travel.

Take copies

Photocopy your passport and insurance policy. Then make notes of 24-hour emergency numbers, together with credit card and ticket details. And leave your copies and notes, plus your itinerary and contact details with family and friends.

Money

Take enough money and back-up funds for your trip. And dont forget you might need enough for a return flight if required, because the FCO cant get you a free flight home if you run out. Also be aware of the possibility of credit card fraud.

Health

At least six weeks before you go, find out what vaccinations you need. Your destination may carry a risk of malaria, typhoid, cholera or rabies, so visit the FCO website to find out more. Plus, check you are in good health before taking part in hazardous or strenuous activities. If you are on any special medication, make sure you have a sufficient supply.
