Rab/M Strata Hoodie
I have now owned my Rab Strata Hoodie for a little over a month. In that time I have used it on a five day trip to Snowdonia.
We all know the layering system for our clothing which if used properly will contribute to our welfare and enjoyment, the mid layer is obviously where the Strata fits in. The Strataâs two main characteristics; warm when wet and quick to dry are both as a result of the Polartec alpha insulation. I am not going to go on about how this happens, it just does. The fact that it will keep you warm when it is damp or wet means that I was willing to put it on when I was sweaty, It stopped me feeling chilled, it did get wet, It dried very quickly, keeping me nice and warm. Gone are the days when you had to look after your clothing to look after yourself, the Strata hoodie is like a puppy: use it, abuse it, it will always come back for more, and it will look after you.
Rab have cut the Hoodie well, it is very comfortable even with a rucksac on, and it looks good. In the mens you have a choice Rust (they mean red), or Ebony (Blue I think), the ladies have a grey. The hood can be rolled and stored rolled up as a collar, but this somehow stays off your neckâ¦no horrible neck or head aches. Rab have used a Pertex outer this allows the breathability, but it stops the wind. One more additional cool feature, is that it stores within its own breast pocket.
The Rab Strata Hoodie is remarkably thin, at first I thought Rab had forgotten to put the insulation in! Unlike Down Jackets the Strata Hoodie will work when you are working, It will dry in a flash, mine did, all my friends put wet jackets back on, I didnât it had dried! It is WWW (walking work wear) Other jackets do not have the same characteristics, they either; keep the wind off, or keep you warm, the Strata does both. Most other jackets dry like old people using ladders i.e. slowly, not the Strata. I did think that as the Strata does not have vents Rab have cut costs, this could not be further from the truth, the Pertex and the Polartec alpha are so breatable you donât need vents, and If you did have them you would be chilled, if you want this level of performance buy an inferior jacket.
I could go on about the insulation being on the outside so the pockets are true hand warmers, but Iâm not, this type of detail is froth on top. The Strata is walking work wear (www) made by intelligent people, for us.
Buy it, use it.

I used this for trekking in the Himalayas and it's a great jacket.
I got it in the sale which made it very good value, I'd think it is a bit expensive at its original price.
It's great when there is sun, wind and quite cool air at high altitudes.
A couple of things that I think could do with improvment (minor points):
- while the arm length is perfect (i.e. not too short) and the overall size is great, I felt it was a bit short: 1 or 2 inches longer would have been more comfortable. But that seems to be a general RAB issue for me
- The Zips are great, but other products (RAB and other brands) do have better Zip-holders, i.e. the ZIPs are easier to grab.
- The interior lining, which is some soft, moisture wicking thing, looks as if it might deterioirate quite quickly if used heavily. That's a bit of a shame at this price.
But I'd buy it again and would recommend it

This is a brilliant jacket for the price. Lightweight, warm for the weight. Keeps the wind out. Excellent fit. Is great for keeping dry. Rain out and sweat away. Can be used for any occasion.

Light, but warm jacket with an excellent fitted shape. It's perfect for layering under and over other outerwear. The price was super too.

The Rab Strata is a synthetic down midlayer jacket, ideally worn under a hard shell outer jacket. It is not cheap but gives you a flexible layering solution for being on the mountain. I've just been out using this with an outer shell and have been happy with it. It's great as you can also use it as an outer jacket when it's not too cold. It's very light and breathable and looks good too.

Rated 5 out of 5Â by Haighy Top quality insulating midlayer
Have used this jacket primarily as a Scottish winter climbing midlayer I can say that it does the job perfectly. The construction of the synthetic insulating fabric means that perspiration can move quickly out without comprimising heat loss. I run hot and found that it is a layer that can be put on, and stays on without overheating.
