Inov8 Men's Trailroc 245
British shoes for British weather!
There aren't many trail shoes outside of the zany Vibram gloves that offer trail shoe grip and foot protection combined with low or no heel to toe drop - these are not completely flat but close to (the guy in the shop looked it up and as I remember it these are 2mm). As with virtually all shoes, the insoles of these are essentially flat too - personally I'll add an insole with a bigger instep to support my arches as otherwise I suffer.
Really nice natural running in these as you'd hope with a flat shoe. Grip is good, though not outstanding - with the current rain and mud, I was still slipping around a bit though nowhere near as much as my road shoes. There are gnarlier grips out there if you need real bite - these are a decent compromise for anyone that's mixing road, path, trail, off-road, etc. If anything, these are verging on the uncomfortable for extended stretches periods on roads or flat paths - I wouldn't recommend for pure road use but good for the mixed use most people will use them for.
The shoes aren't waterproof & are relatively mesh like right down to the soles, so get water in even at times when you wouldn't necessarily expect it, but they drain extremely well & quickly - pair with waterproof socks if you want to keep feet dry.
They look pretty good too - but they are expensive. I think overall worth the cash if you want a good all-round shoe for off-road use.

Fantastic off road running shoes
Fantastic off road running shoes, definitevely I can feal I am under control of every step in those. Tested during Trans Alpine Race and had a super experience running in those shoes in every weather and trail conditions.

Fantastic all round trail race shoe
I love these shoes. I bought them for a coast path marthon. Going into the race, I had only done a maximum of 6 miles in them and I had slight reservations over how they would fare on very hard ground as they felt very stiff. These proved to be totally unfounded - they coped brilliantly with everything, thick gloopy mud, sand, loose dry coast path, gravel, grass and tarmac. I was particularly impressed that whilst feeling light and fast, they had enough cushioning to help me out on a cycle path at miles 22-24 when my form was falling to pieces. I have seen others comment that they found the toe box restrictive. Everyone's feet are different but I had no such problems and I generally prefer quite a wide toe box (New Balance Minimus are my road shoes). I went for a 10 which is my normal size and they fit perfectly. Well done Inov8.
