PRESS RELEASE: 1st November 2012

The North Face Snow+Rock Ski Club of Great Britain

The North Face® Avalanche Awareness Lecture Series in association with Snow+Rock and the Ski Club of Great Britain

Fresh powder and the back-country have epic potential for fun and adventure but there’s a fine line between epic and dangerous. Knowledge is the best tool for keeping on the safer side of the line. Join this lecture tour and ramp up your understanding of winter back-country snow travel.

Last year’s tour was a sell out to packed snowsport audiences across the country. Here’s what participants had to say:

“Excellent. It doesn’t matter what level you are – aspiring or veteran – you’ll certainly take a lot away from the talk. The multi-media delivery, real-life examples, great pictures and videos made it a really memorable experience. And that’s the point right? To be safer backcountry you need to remember what to do when it goes wrong or better still, avoid getting into a pickle in the first place.”

In a clear, comprehensible way that’s not weighed down by esoteric snow science, this year’s lecture has been updated with new images, videos, content and personal experiences. The aim is still to keep it practical and applicable to a range of snowsport lovers and to increase their margin of safety on snow and especially back-country. The interactive lecture covers key concepts such as snowpack development and avalanche formation, how to think terrain not snow when route planning, signs of unstable snow, human factors and safe travel techniques. New this year, you’ll also learn about avalanche airbag systems. Whether you are an experienced ski mountaineer, keen alpine skier or heading off piste for the first time, this lecture is a great introduction to an important subject and an opportunity to refresh – or perhaps rethink - your back-country knowledge in time for the coming winter season’s adventures. There are brilliant spot prizes of The North Face® equipment to be won at each lecture and there’s an overall series prize to win one of two The North Face® Patrol 24 ABS packs worth £750.

The lectures will again be delivered by James Morland, a Canadian Avalanche Association Level 2 professional with over 15 years experience of avalanche related work. He is the founder of Elemental Adventure (EA Heliskiing) and has skied extensively in many exciting locations around the world.

All proceeds from the lectures will go to Disability Snowsport UK. In 2011 the lecture series raised nearly £2,500 for the charity.
