Choosing a shoe for MDS I bought these shoes for the MDS coming up in a couple of weeks. Though I am yet to test them in the desert conditions, as a trail shoe they are unbelievably comfy. Good wide toe box, wide shoe base which adds to stability as you negotiate tricky terrain. And finally the thick sole of the shoe gives you a nice bounce as you run along, and the way the shoe is designed, you absolutely fly down the hills. Have run several times to break them in for the race, and so far no issues with blisters, no pressure on any part of the foot. Finish a 30km run in no worse condition (foot wise) that when I started. Very light weight considering how chunky the sole is. Only thing to note - order a half size to a size bigger than you normally would as their sizes are on the smaller size. 26 March 2013

Brilliant, very comfortable and great to run in Absoloutly brilliant. A great pair of super off-road running shoes. They eat up the miles and have brought back please to running again. I bought them following surgery to my right knee, having tried to run again in other shoes, the Hoka's have enabled me to get fit again and now two years after surgery am able to run decent distances again with no resultant pain. 24 August 2012

How it Works:

The Mafate 2 has 2.5x the EVA volume of a normal running shoe. This ensures high levels of impact absorption and a smooth underfoot feel that allows you to glide over even the most challenging terrain, creating the sensation of flight as you run downhill.
The Mafate 2 utilises a 50% forward rockering profile to create a unique rolling motion. This provides a smooth, energy efficient stride transition from the heel strike through to the push off from the forefoot, allowing you to push ahead for optimum performance.
Using a lower ramp angle (4 mm) and a rocker shaped, feather-weight midsole, the Hoka Mafate 2 reproduces the conditions a barefoot runner experiences when running on grass or sand.
The oversized midsole will absorb any hard obstacle your foot may encounter, and once compressed, the featherweight EVA midsole springs back under your forefoot for increased acceleration.
With 50% more surface area in contact with the ground, and a midsole that allows the foot to recess into it by almost one inch, the shoe provides protection, stability, and pronation control unmatched in stability running shoes.
