Hilleberg Anjan 2

Hilleberg Anjan 2 5 5 1 1
Pricey but near perfect I spent a long time choosing my new tent. I was looking for light, spacious, durable, fly/outer pitch first, compact packing to fit in my ruck sack. 2 person so I can camp in luxury by myself but be big enough for two to share without feeling cramped. Eventually I settled on the Anjan2, but I kept thinking there has to be a flaw... so I took a train to London and pitched this tent in the S+R Covent Garden shop before I bought it to be sure. The only flaw I can find now is the high price, but for me at least - it's worth it. I also pitched the Anjan3 (it's a little heavier, 3 person) and whilst bigger I decided the Anjan 2 really was plenty big enough. The 4 season Nallo got a look in too, but I'm not likely to be in a tent in snow conditions any more so I saved money and weight choosing the Anjan. I've just returned from wild camping in Scotland (end of october) and using it has been sublime. If I could design a tent, I would love to have designed this one. Here's why: a) Size - it comfortably fitted two of us. I've some photos but I can't attach them here unfortunately, but our two thermarest ridgerest roll mats fitted comfortably and we generally didn't find ourselves touching the vertical sides of the inner tent. The arch of the poles gave us plenty of head room. b) Porch size - plenty of space to fit our two rucksacks in the porch too. c) Ground sheet - sewn in ground sheet didn't let any damp in. I know, they're not meant to - but past tents have often had a damp floor in the morning. d) Easy pitching - the poles fitted easily into the sleeves and needed a sensible amount of force to bend them into shape. Perfect balance of force/pressure e) Great guy ropes - I know, they're just guy ropes, but each one attaches to two points on the tent and is simple to tension once pegged. It wasn't something I'd considered before. f) String loops for pegging the inner/poles to the ground - my past tents have used elastic, but that fails over time and I'd replaced many with string. This came with string, so it just works. No bother. g) pack size - I didn't realise until I packed to travel, but it's the same length as my rolled up Thermarest ridgerest. I rolled them up tightly together and they fitted neatly inside the top section of my pack. h) Packing away - you know how some tents are a struggle to fit into their bag? The Hilleburg bag has plenty of space. We didn't event roll the tent too tightly and it easily fitted in. I like no hassle packing. i) Pegs - Alloy copper coloured pegs. They're light but were easy to push into the earth and also easy to remove. I imagine they'd hammer in OK too. Better than you're typical steel peg but I guess at this price you'd expect that. The colour made them easy to spot j) and the most unexpected good feature I discovered - The spare pole & repair kit is secured inside the pole bag. When pouring out the poles, the spare stays put. No getting mixed up with the other poles, no chance of losing it. A simple thing to do but a very nice touch. I really can see where the money goes on this tent. So, what would I change about this tent? Just the price. 02 November 2014

The new Hilleberg Anjan 2 is fantastically light and remarkably sturdy and is the ideal choice for 3 season backpacking. The Anjan's outer tent it cut high this leaves space to promote constant air flow while still providing protection from unpleasant weather. For more venting in warm weather, both the front and the back ends can be rolled away to expose the large mesh vent at the back and the near-full mesh inner tent door.
