Deuter Fox 30 Backpack
Forget the kids...
Apparently this is the perfect pack for your junior adventurers, that may be so but it also the perfect day pack for the less sprightly as well. I had my first multi-pitch experience this Summer in Italy and I was slightly dreading it for a couple of reasons. One of them being the Deuter pack I usually use for my hikes etc. Whilst a perfectly good bag for hiking, it is completely awful for climbing with as it has that back vent system that ensures your pack stays a mile away from your body and so pulls you out on every climb ensuring a terrifying experience.
Not so with this little number. It fit snugly on to my back and carried everything that I needed for a day of climbing (and a little more). I dragged that bag up through chimney after chimney, afeared that my nice new bag would be a ripped mess by the end of its traumatic climb and when I reached the top and shrugged the little red fox off my back it sat there, a little bruised looking but more or less unscathed. This is a fine bag and I would confidently recommend it as a good solid little day bag.

A must have for all hard-core six year olds!
This pack is astonishing - we bought this for our (short) six year old boy. Firstly, this was the only pack that we could find (and we tried a lot!) that could really fit him properly - the back adjustment section is excellent and the overall fit is as good as you'll find on an adult pack. He's now used it most weekends for a couple of months on non-trivial routes in Dartmoor and the Brecon Beacons including the summits of Pen y Fan and Corn Du and up the Roman Road to Cribyn. It's proven itself comfortable on long treks and short scrambles and has yet to incur any rips despite our six year old's robust approach to equipment. Next month he'll take it over the Pyrenees where the numerous straps and attachment points will be very helpful. The adjustment system is extremely flexible and ensures the pack will grow with him. Overall, an extremely well thought-out pack, big enough for kids to carry their own sleeping bag/roll mat and essential kit and clever enough to fit our diminutive six year old - who loves it.
