What to wear: The Layering System
Multiple layers are the best solution to accomodate your changing requirements during the course of a day on the mountain. Layers allow you to regulate your temperature in this changing environment. On a long chair lift you need to retain your heat and protect yourself from wind chill and snow. When you are active and generating body heat you either need ventilation or to remove a layer.
The Base Layer
this layer must be close fitting to maximise the fabric’s moisture wicking capabilities. We offer base layers made from merino wool or fully synthetic fabrics to give you a choice of feel and performance. Both fabrics allow moisture (perspiration) to be transported away from the skin and out through your layers. Cotton, by comparison, absorbs moisture and holds it next to your skin making you feel damp and cold when resting.
The Mid Layer
The mid layer provides you with versatile insulation, both on and off the slopes. It must be highly breathable to allow moisture transported from your base layer to be released. merino wool and fleece are both very popular and perform well as mid layers. In cold conditions, these layers trap air to provide extra warmth. Wearing multiple thin layers is less bulky and more versatile than wearing a single thick layer. A gilet (body warmer) is a useful addition to any layering system.
The Outer Layer
The jacket and pants form the outer layer of your clothing system and are designed to protect you from the snow and wind. As well as the outer fabric being breathable, both jacket and pants will feature zippered venting to allow you to dump excess body heat. This outer layer should also offer durable protection against the abrasive effects of snow, ice and equipment. Gore-Tex and Dermizax make some of the best technical fabrics available, ask our staff for other recommendations from our range to suit your needs. Our range of jackets offer various levels of insulation, some will have no insulation at all and require a warmer mid layer. Our staff will be able to advise you.
