Arc'teryx Men's Theta AR Jacket
Expensive but the Quality is worth every penny!
Originally looked at the Beta AR (All Rounder) but that's a little shorter and more for climbers, which I'm not. It felt more like a jacket. So I went for the Theta AR instead as it's a little longer and feels more like a snowboarding / rain coat. It goes over my hips and covers my backside.
My measurements are: Chest - 41". Waist - 36". Hip - 40". So using the Size Guide I opted for the Large as it seemed more of a match. After ordering Large & Medium to the Birmingham Snow & Rock store, I tried both sizes. The Large was like a tent! The Theta is an athletic fit but it's so generous it takes into account you will be layering. So I tried the Medium. That fit perfectly. I can wear just a T-shirt with this on top and not be swallowed in it and then quite comfortably fit a Base-Layer, T-shirt, Fleece & then this Theta on top and still move easily with no stretching at all to the coat.
As for the Arc'Teryx Theta AR, well, it's the best coat/jacket I've ever owned!! It has understated quality. You know the technology in this coat but it doesn't shout about it. I can walk down the High-Street and feel like I'm wearing a £60 coat and then get into the wilderness and feel like I'm wearing a state-of-the-art piece of Tech that will protect me from wind & rain! It will take the knocks from my Backpack! I have total confidence in it!
If you're going to put phones or cash or valuables in the pockets, then put them in waterproof containers first. I've seen people complain about their stuff getting soaked & broken but obviously you will sweat through this coat.
So yeah....Quality, Quality, Quality! And the staff at Snow & Rock were amazing. They knew their stuff, helped with price matching and advised me on things I didn't even think about. Thank you Snow & Rock (Birmingham)! The most expensive clothing I've ever bought but the best I've ever bought!

This shell is durable, breathable and the cut is great. There is excellent attention to detail. Bought as a lightweight Gore Tex jacket for hiking/skiing it fits the bill perfectly. The design is minimalist but this jacket is not missing anything. Having just returned from a week's off-piste in the Alps I can honestly say that for me, this is a perfect shell!

At over £400 the jacket would have to be exceptional. It wasn't. I have used jackets that were less than half the price that were better.
The overall design was good but there were the following faults: cut too generous, hood a poor fit, large gap at the top of the front of the neck of the jacket which would allow major water ingress, fabric stiff and uncomfortable - making the jacket bulky when in a rucksack, silly pocket in the sleeve - bound to leak.

iT DOES WHAT IT SAYS IT WILL DO 2
Verry well made and very light as well. The two front pockets are nice and deep, ideal for putting maps, mobile phone etc

Excellent piece of kit
This jacket is not cheap and after exhaustive web research I finally went to he Arcteryx shop to try on the various jackets. The staff in the shop were extremely knowledgeable and helpful. They must be fairly used to customers umming and arring over these products given the hefty price Tag. The Theta is slightly longer than the other styles which actually makes it look like a slim fit even though it isn't. This is easily the best piece f technical clothing I have ever bought and it has kept me bone dry in some serios downpours. Haven't tested it's breath ability but giveen all the underarm zips I would guess its pretty good. Highly recommended despite the price tag. One to own for years and it's packable and looks great.
