Arc'teryx Men's Beta SL Pant

Arc'teryx Men's Beta SL Pant 5 5 1 1
High quality, lightweight waterproof shell. With so much choice on the market it is often the little things that help you make your mind up. It may be a minor point, but what sold me on these trousers is the lace hook. They feature on most of Arc's waterproof trousers. After searching high and low I could not find any other waterproof trousers that have this feature. It is the kind of attention to detail you can expect from Arc. So many waterproof trousers are too thin at the ankle, so all of the water funnels into your shoes. The few brands that are wide enough to cover your shoe don't stay in place. A simple little addition of a hook solves all of that. The other feature that sold me on them is the weight. There are lighter waterproof trousers out there, but these are only about 100g heavier than the lightest, and they are far superior in quality and waterproofness. Call me old fashioned, but you just can't beat Gore-Tex when it comes to waterproofing. I just don't trust that Pertex and similar fabrics are truly waterproof rather than just water resistant. I also love that they are cut ever so slightly roomier as they are specifically designed to be an emergency waterproof shell that you slip on over your trousers. I wear regular fit jeans and they fit over them perfectly. They would also be fine if you wanted to wear them on their own. If there was one minor thing it would be that they are Gore-Tex Paclite rather than Active Shell. The Active Shell is the newer of the fabrics and is supposed to be more breathable. For me that is not really an issue as I will only be wearing them as an emergency shell, but some people may want to consider this. I have been assured that the waterproofness of both fabrics is the same. If you really want Active Shell then you may want to consider the Mountain Equipment Firelite Pant or the Haglofs Gram Pant, which is a 3 layer Active Shell. The Active Shell pants are slightly lighter, but less durable as they are 30D, whereas the Beta SL are 40D and have 150D reinforcements around the ankles. In the end I decided on the Beta SL because they were the best mix of features I was looking for, and they had the magical lace hook. :-) Happy Camping. 11 August 2014
